Integrative “Big Idea” for Public School Development

“SEL” is increasingly viewed as the most promising and integrative “Big Idea” for public school development and student performance.

<

This is because SEL, or “social emotional learning”:

<

  • Significantly improves academic & behavioral outcomes for students

<

  • Applies to all students, not just a select few with identified needs

<

  • Prevents many unnecessary distractions and problems for students and staff alike

<

  • Is evidence-based

<

  • Is efficient, especially when comprehensively implemented school-wide as the foundation of a high-performance learning culture.

<

<

SEL improves the overall learning & teaching climate.

<

<

SEL allows for more effective integration of SS/HS goals and strategies.

<

☛ Safe Schools/Healthy Students (SS/HS) initiatives are directly supported by high quality school-wide Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) programming.

<

The work of the SEL committee will overlap with key strategies associated with the SS/HS core elements.

<

SS/HS project directors should consider the most efficient organizational strategy for operating their school’s SEL committee, i.e., whether SEL is added to the agenda of an existing SS/HS committee, becomes the focus of a sub-committee, or warrants the formation of a new committee.

<

School leaders are responsible for establishing SEL as the “Big Idea” for school-wide positive change.

<

To ensure that SEL is truly embedded in a school’s culture, school leaders must actively commit to and engage in actions to bring an SEL perspective to all school activities, both in and outside the classroom.

<

It is up to school leaders to proclaim SEL (however specifically described in that setting) as the priority.

<

School leaders are then responsible for leading their school community through a systematic planning and implementation process that establishes SEL as foundational to the school’s educational mission and practices.

Logo-BCSoffers you access to an evidence-based process for supporting school staff to more reliably model constructive SEL skills — with each other as well as with your students — no matter what classroom-based SEL model(s) your school opts for.
