Background SEL Information Summary

SEL (social-emotional learning) enjoys one of the strongest research bases and shows that well-implemented programming promotes meaningful student growth across many areas of importance to educators and parents.

<

Historically schools have invested with greatest detail on their students’ cognitive skills development and mastery.

<

⚠  Schools typically focus with less systematic comprehensiveness when it comes to their students’ achievements of intra- and interpersonal skills mastery.

<

Many have recognized that the historic status quo needs to change.

<

More recent meta-analytical data, derived across many peer-reviewed studies, indicate that students’ intra- and interpersonal skills mastery correlate even more robustly with students’ immediate and long-term success.

<

☞  Many (a majority?) of preK-12 public schools in the United States today are implementing piecemeal or school-wide SEL programming, including inclusion in the curricula for their student population.

<

As with other social change, successful attempts to change the status quo in a sustainable fashion must always be planted and nourished in a homegrown manner.

<

Many teachers are convinced of the importance of “SEL” already.

<

Many individual teachers, and some teachers groups, have been experimenting for years on their own with providing social and emotional learning in a variety of ways.

<

These teachers intuitively understand or have grown to understand the foundational importance of SEL for both academic learning and social adjustment.

<

Many teachers very well understand that SEL promotes their student’s constructive engagement, pro-social behavior, cooperation with others, problem-solving abilities, and health and well being, as well as academic success, while also preventing a variety of problems such as truancy, alcohol and drug use, bullying, and violence.

<

Hence, in enthusiasm, the many notable piecemeal efforts by many teachers that we see across the country!

<

Teachers want support from their principals to implement SEL programming more effectively school-wide.

<

We find schools, along with their districts, are increasingly prioritizing SEL.

<

☛  High quality school-wide SEL programming supports Safe Schools/Healthy Students (SS/HS) initiatives.
